Saleable Technology Identified

CRRI has developed a number of saleable technologies which include hybrid rice, high yielding rice varieties, implements and Customized Leaf Colour Chart.

1. Hybrid Rice


CRRI's research work on hybrid rice technology was started long before the starting of network mode project in the year 1989. During 1980, CRRI procured seven CMS, nine maintainer and thirteen restorer lines from the IRRI and with concerted scientific as well as technical efforts, has released three promising hybrids, Ajay, Rajlaxmi and CR Dhan 701 utilizing the CMS lines, CRMS 31 A (WA cytoplasm) and CRMS 32A (Kalinga-I cytoplasm). These hybrids were found suitable under multiple stress conditions like excess water, saline/alkaline and boro.


Besides the hybrids released, a number of experimental hybrids are under evaluation in the different national trials and a few of them are very promising. The parental line improvement also is being taken up to develop superior parents with resistance to major pests, good grain quality, higher outcrossing and good combining ability. Parental lines of Ajay and Rajalaxmi has been pyramided with bacterial blight resistance genes. Many of the centres including CRRI are involved in the parental line improvement to develop superior parental lines which will be useful to develop hybrids with elevated levels of heterosis with good grain quality and resistance to different biotic and abiotic stresses.


Salient features of the hybrids are listed below.


Rajalaxmi (CRMS 32A X IR 42266-29-3R): The hybrid in the duration of 125-135 days is suitable for irrigated and shallow low lands with a plant height of 105-110 cms. It has long slender grains without aroma and has a yield potential of up to 7.0 t/ha. It also possess cold tolerance at seedling stage and is based on a diverse cytoplasm source (Kalinga-I). This hybrid has shown good performance in alkaline and coastal saline conditions. It has good grain quality characteristics with high spikelet fertility and is tolerant to stagnant excess water for 7 to 10 days at tillering stage. The hybrid has field tolerance to blast, bacterial blight, stem borer & BPH. It has shown good performance in the states of Orissa, Maharashtra, Chattisgarh and West Bengal.

Ajay (CRMS 31A X IR 42266-29-3R): The hybrid in the duration of 125-130 days is suitable for irrigated and shallow low lands with a plant height of 105-110 cms. It has long slender grains without aroma and has a yield potential of up to 7.5 t/ha. It has good grain quality characteristics with high spikelet fertility and high milling recovery, HRR and is tolerant to stagnant excess water for 7 to 10 days at tillering stage. The hybrid is resistant to blast and MR to RTD and has field tolerance to bacterial blight, stem borer & BPH. It has shown good performance in the states of Orissa, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Goa, Chattisgarh and West Bengal.

CR Dhan 701 (CRMS 31A x CRL 22R): The hybrid in the duration of 142-145 days is suitable for irrigated and shallow low lands with a plant height of 115-117 cms. It has medium slender grains without aroma and has a yield potential of up to 6.5 to 7.0 t/ha. It is based on a WA cytoplasm source. This hybrid can be grown in both season, Rabi and Kharif. It has good grain quality characteristics with high spikelet fertility and is tolerant to stagnant excess water for 7 to 10 days at tillering stage and promising under low light condition. The hybrid has moderatly resistant to blast, RTD, Sheath Blight and GLH. It has shown good performance in the states of Gujarat, Bihar, Odisha, Chhattisgarh and Karnataka.

2. HYVs


CRRI has developed 107 high yielding varieties for different ecosystems like upland, rainfed shallow lowland, medium deepwater, deepwater, irrigated and coastal saline ecosystems. The varieties have different characteristics such as aromatic, high protein, high zinc, soak & eat and suitable for puffing, flakes and noodles.
